There are several types of dashes that you can insert using your keyboard, each having a specific function in typography.

  1. Short dash (hyphen -): The short dash is the most common, used especially for compound words. Simply press the - key (located between the ? and = keys, near the numeric keypad).
  2. Long dash (em dash ): The long dash is mainly used for dialogues or parenthetical statements in a text.
    • Hold down the Alt key.
    • While holding Alt, type the number combination 0151 on the numeric keypad.
