Get the # (hash) on your keyboard

The hash symbol # (hashtag) can be typed using different key combinations depending on the keyboard type and system language.

Here are the most common shortcuts to type the # symbol on a computer.

On an AZERTY keyboard (French)

Press:

Alt Gr + 3

Result: #

This shortcut works on most AZERTY keyboards used on Windows PCs.

On a QWERTY keyboard (US)

Press:

Shift + 3

Result: #

On a QWERTY keyboard (UK)

Press:

Shift + #

On Windows using the numeric keypad

You can also use the Alt code:

Hold the Alt key

Type 35 on the numeric keypad

Release the Alt key

Result: #

On Mac

Press:

Shift + 3

If the hash key does not work

If you cannot type the # symbol, several reasons may explain this:

  • the keyboard language is incorrect

  • the keyboard is configured as QWERTY instead of AZERTY

  • the key is defective

  • a keyboard driver issue

To check the keyboard language:

Open Settings

Click Time & Language

Select Language & region

Make sure the keyboard layout matches your keyboard (AZERTY, QWERTY, etc.).
