SD Card Not Recognized Issue on ROG Xbox Ally X

Your ROG Xbox Ally X does not recognize the SD card or it does not appear in Windows.

 Basic Checks

 1. Reinsert the SD card

  • Remove the SD card
  • Reinsert it properly until it clicks
  • Restart the console

 Improper insertion is a common cause.

 2. Check in Windows

  1. Press File Explorer
  2. Go to This PC
  3. Check if the card appears

 If it does not appear, proceed to the next steps.

 3. Check in Disk Management

  1. Right-click the Start menu
  2. Click on Disk Management
  3. Look for your SD card

 Possible cases:

  • It appears without a drive letter → assign a letter
  • It is uninitialized → initialize it

 4. Test the SD card

  • Test the card on another device (PC, smartphone)
  • Try another SD card on your console

How to format a microSD card to NTFS on the ROG Xbox Ally (full Xbox mode)?

The ROG Xbox Ally allows using a microSD card as external storage.
For it to work correctly, the card must be formatted as NTFS.

  1. Insert your microSD card into the console (near the headphone jack).
  2. An AutoPlay window appears - tap it.
  3. Select “Open folder to view files”.
  4. In the sidebar, do a long press on the microSD card.
  5. Click “Format”.
  6. Choose NTFS as the file system, then click “Start”.

⚠️ Important: formatting deletes all data on the card.

Tip: if the AutoPlay window does not appear, you can also format the card via Windows desktop mode.

How to format a microSD card to NTFS (Windows desktop mode)

  1. Switch to Windows desktop mode
    - Hold the Xbox button or swipe up from the bottom of the screen
  2. Select Windows Desktop, then click Continue
  3. Open File Explorer
  4. Do a long press on your microSD card (e.g., “Untitled (D:)”)
  5. Click Format
  6. Choose NTFS, then click Start

⚠️ Important: formatting deletes all data.

How to create a folder to install your games on the Asus ROG Ally X Xbox?

After formatting:

  1. Click “Choose a folder for your games”
  2. Select New folder
  3. Name the folder
  4. Click Select folder

 You can now install your games on the microSD card or the internal SSD.

Tip: after using Windows desktop mode, remember to restart the console to return to the Xbox interface.
