Symptoms of a faulty speaker on an Asus laptop
When the internal speakers of an Asus laptop are damaged, several signs may appear:
- crackling or distorted sound
- very low volume
- sound coming from only one side
- no sound at all
If these symptoms appear despite correct audio settings, it is possible that the laptop speaker module is faulty.
Check that sound is not output to another device
If you are using a laptop, check that the sound is not being output to another audio device:
- Bluetooth headset
- external monitor
- external speakers
Also make sure that:
- system volume is enabled
- sound is not muted
To check the audio volume:
- open the Start menu
- search for Adjust system volume
Check the audio output device
In some cases, Windows may automatically select the wrong audio device.
To check the active device:
- open the Start menu
- search for Manage audio devices
- make sure the selected device corresponds to the laptop speakers
Check application audio settings
Some applications have their own audio settings.
If the sound is low or absent in a specific application:
- check the application volume slider
- make sure sound is not muted in its settings

Use the Windows audio troubleshooter
Windows includes a tool that can automatically diagnose certain sound issues.
To launch this tool:
- open Settings
- go to System > Sound
- click Troubleshoot
This tool can detect and fix some audio configuration errors.
Check Windows updates
An outdated system may cause audio malfunctions.
To check for updates:
- open the Start menu
- search for Check for updates
- install available updates
- restart your computer
If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.
Check and update audio drivers
Outdated or corrupted audio drivers may prevent sound from working properly.
Update via Device Manager
- open Device Manager
- find Sound, video and game controllers
- right-click your audio device
- select Update driver
Reinstall audio drivers
If the driver seems faulty:
- open Device Manager
- uninstall the audio driver
- restart your computer
After restarting, Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.
Change the audio format
In some cases, the issue may be related to the configured audio format.
To change this setting:
- open the Control Panel
- go to Hardware and Sound > Sound
- right-click your default audio device
- select Properties
- in the Advanced tab, change the audio format
Then test the sound to see if the issue is resolved.
Restart Windows audio services
Some Windows audio services may become unresponsive.
To restart them:
- open Windows search
- type Services
Restart the following services:
- Windows Audio
- Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
