Why won't my laptop start up anymore?

Most Common Causes

Have you ever experienced your laptop not turning on overnight? The stress builds up because you fear losing all your data, and you're unsure where the problem is coming from?
Don't panic, there can be several reasons why your laptop won't start. In this article, we will go through them so you can identify the issue and fix your PC as quickly as possible. This problem often occurs if you don't shut down your hardware properly; for example, a laptop that stays in sleep mode instead of being turned off can experience bugs, such as not turning on.

Check Power Connections

First and foremost, it's crucial to check if the laptop is properly connected to the power source, either from the wall outlet or the laptop's power connector. A poorly connected cable can be enough to prevent a computer from starting. You can also check your laptop's temperature: if it feels hot, it's not a good sign; a component may have overheated and caused the failure. You can find all the spare parts and components to repair your Asus laptop on our online store.
You can also test the connection on another power outlet because it's not uncommon for the current intensity to be insufficient on an outlet (for various reasons), thus preventing the laptop from getting the power it needs to start.
If the system is powered, and the lights on your device's components are on, proceed directly to the "Problem Related to a Device or the Motherboard" step.

Otherwise, follow these tips:
- Place your computer flat to perform these checks
- Check the cables from the wall, plug in another device to see if it turns on
- Verify that your charger is correctly plugged in

Sometimes, the problem is as simple as a poorly connected cable; in this case, the issue is quickly resolved.

Hardware Malfunction

Let's move on to more serious matters! The startup blockage can stem from a hardware malfunction. Most often, dust can prevent a fan from spinning; if so, the system will prevent computers from booting. That's why it's highly recommended to use an air can once or twice a month on fans, vents, and other connections.

Battery or Charger Issue

The problem may also arise from a faulty or discharged battery or a faulty charger. To properly diagnose the issue, turn on the PC with the charger connected to the power outlet: if the PC turns on, the problem is not with the laptop.

This probably means that the charger is faulty or that the power connector pin is broken and no longer makes contact with the socket. Rest assured, both can be replaced.

If the charger works, you can proceed with recharging the battery (it is essential to respect the charging cycles). If it doesn't charge, it may be poorly clipped or poorly connected in its compartment, or unfortunately, it may also be out of service.

Device or Motherboard Issue

Another problem you may encounter may be related to a defective device, such as an incompatible RAM stick with your system or a secondary hard drive conflicting with the primary hard drive. It is therefore recommended to unplug and replug these devices one by one to discover the culprit.

Another more serious problem that can call into question the repair of laptops: a defective motherboard. The motherboard is the central cog of the computer, the part that makes everything work. If it is out of order, then its replacement is inevitable... But the price of a motherboard is often equivalent to the price of the computer itself. When this problem arises, the most common solution is to replace the laptop. Check out our range of new laptops guaranteed 2 years by the manufacturer for new models.

Infected by a Virus

It is possible that your computer has been infected by a malicious virus that paralyzes it. To resolve this issue, you can use a cleaning program installed on a backup USB drive. Once the software is installed on the drive, it should start automatically, initiating an automatic scan to eliminate the blocking virus or allowing a startup in safe mode to identify the virus.
Once this process is established, restart your computer in safe mode (at power-up, press F8 several times and select "safe mode"). This will allow you to start Windows with only the programs necessary for the operating system startup. If this works, you can eliminate all hardware causes and focus on eradicating the virus.
If after all these investigations, you still can't find the cause of this failure, it's advisable to seek help from a computer professional who can provide a complete diagnosis and identify the issue.
